SR1SCB and SR1SCD
You must memorize/master the meanings of the following terms. The list will be updated from time to time.
Chemistry = It is a scientific study of the composition, structure, properties and interactions of matter.
Matter = It is anything that occupies space and has a mass. It can be an atom, molecule or compound.
Diffusion = It is a process through which the particles of a substance move between the particles of another substance.
Melting = It is a process through which a solid changes into a liquid when it absorbs energy. Example: an ice cube becomes water.
(modify accordingly for boiling, freezing and condensation)
Sublimation = It is a process through which a solid changes directly into a gas without passing through the liquid state and vice versa. Example: Dry ice becomes gas.
Melting point = It is the temperature at which a solid changes into a liquid at a particular pressure. Example: An ice cube melts into water at 0 degree celcius.
(modify accordingly for boiling point and freezing point)
Isotopes = They are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. Example: C-12, C13 and C-14 respectively have 6, 7 and 8 neutrons but they do have 6 protons within the nucleus. C-14 can be used to estimate the age of bones by measuring the fraction of carbon-14 it contains.
Avogadro constant = It is the number of particles in one mole of substance. It is defined as 6 X 1023.
Molar mass = It is the mass (in gram) of any solid substance that is equivalent to its relative atomic mass (for atom), relative molecular mass (for molecule) or relative formula mass (for ionic compound). For example, the molar masses for Na and NaCl are 23 g/mol and 58.5 g/mol respectively.
Molar volume = It is the volume occupied by any gas that is equivalent to 1 mole of particles at a particular temperature and pressure. At standard temperature (0 degree celsius) and pressure (1 atm) (STP), the molar volume is 22.4 dm3/mol. At room temperature (25 degree celsius, 1 atm), the molar volume is 24 dm3/mol.

Teacher, do we need to give an example for each Meaning? Oo
ReplyDeleteLoong, depend on the marks..Usually, the definition carries 1-2 marks. If you think it is suitable to give an example, then just give one.
